Art emerged in the 800s, greatly improved through archaic period and reached its peak in the classical period, then it declined in the hellenistic period. 5th century art was the best, the classical artists (polykleitos) Emphasized idealized view of the world: perfection, best standard of greek art. Instead of idealism, realism (portrays life as raw and grotesque) Hellenistic art viewed as weaker, or a degeneration. Hellenistic art is an honest view of life, emotionality. Classical art is emotionless and detached, unreachable. Pergamon altar is where many of the hellenistic pieces of art were found (diffusion of greek culture outside of greece)
