Synoikism: the process of formation of the polis. Athens attributed the formation of polis to theses. Right after dark age then went through a phase of rule by tyrants (561-510 bce) Hoplite warfare: individual soldiers, phalanx joined together to ght. Change in politics and change in how they fought their wars happened at the same time. Each polis was its own governing body of citizens. Lots of loyalty and love of each city state. The time of con ict between the great empire (persia) and the city states (greece) The persian empire launches massive invasions into the city-states twice. One by darius, battle of marathon 490 bce. Xerxes lead the second one, thermopylae 480 bce. Leonidas and 300 spartans defend their land at this battle. The ancient greece you think of, all the great art, philosophy, culture. Acropolis was built after the archaic period, de nes the classical period. Thucydides provide best picture of life, as does xenophon hellenica.
