Lecture 3 september 10th - the greek 8th century bc renaissance. 800-700 bc greek renaissance, the birth of the olympics, and when the greeks start writing their own story. Homer, who wrote the iliad, according to tradition, was blind, and wandered around the greek areas, and wrote down the poem the iliad, which was already passed down as a spoken poem. The iliad tells of the collapse of troy, which happened about 450 years earlier, and because of which it has quite a bit of confusions. The remains of his original writing, is fragments of papyrus. The iliad starts at a famous wedding of peleus and thetis who was a sea goddess , there is a lot of art showing the celebrations of this wedding. All of the gods and goddesses are invited except for eris, her name means conflict which shows why she was excluded.
