The spartans exit the dark ages as a completely new system: the polis. The polis is much more than just a city-state, it represents the people and landscape and much more than just a political boundary. Sparta was one of the first of these to emerge, along the river eurotus river, and surrounded by the taygetus mountain range. This isolation accounts for the unique culture that the spartans formed apart from the other greeks. The dorians migrated south into the greek peninsula when the mycenaeans disbanded. The early spartans struggled, as they were plagued with strife with the citizens striving for power. Lycurgus ( the wolf-worker) was the name and person given to what could be one man or a group of law givers. Her communes with the gods were actually from a high produced by methane gas inhalation. Unlike the athenians who left us great works of art and architecture, the spartans left us next to nothing.
