Theseus was in a battle with the amazons and he captured and married their queen hippolyta. Theseus + hippolyta = hippolytus: athenians would fight off an attack from amazonian woman, thesus fathers a child named hippolytus but doesn"t marry hippolyta. Hippolytus: when hippolytus becomes of age he denies aphrodite and turns his back on love in his life deny his sexuality (live like a monk) Aphrodite is offended by this rejection and she gets angry that. Aphrodite then punishes hippolytus by making his step. Phaedra eventually propositions hippolytus for sex to which he rejects her. Phaedra in an angry rage then goes to theseus and lies to him that hippolytus raped her: hippolytus then is banished from the kingdom.
