Through desire we make ourselves felt in the object world. Self-consciousness can only achieve satisfaction through recognition (something outside of ourselves to validate our identity) Only certain objects can fulfill the subject with self-certainty though (ex. Coffee cup vs. human would only give the human implicit self-recognition. [like if you crushed the cup all you would know was that you had supreme power over the cup]) Glancing at the professor and having him glance back at you confirms your self-consciousness) Each subject becomes certain of themselves but not of the other - it"s not genuine. This is only beaten when there is reciprocity between subjects = To be certain of one"s humanity, one has to obtain recognition not from a person they treat as an object but as a person they recognize humanity in as well (therefore slaves would not work)
