Poets appreciated imagination over intellect shift from metaphysical poetry (i. e. john donne, andrew marvell, george herbert) William wordsworth poetry explores how nature is not simply a beautiful world that someone can escape to; nature holds elements of the divine. Nature becomes the place where one can retreat to in order to develop a relationship with god. Poetry should be a vehicle for the expression of powerful emotions. Continual symbol: refers to a symbols that carry similar meanings throughout all texts. Contextual symbol: refers to a symbol that only becomes symbolic in the context of a particular text. No symbolic significance outside of the particular text (meaning shifts based on the text) Imagery: the use of language to create images or pictures in the imagination of the reader. Refers to any of the five senses (i. e. visual, auditory/oral, tactile)
