The spectator = was a newspaper that took britain by storm, significantly advanced literary criticism. Newspapers were such a new concept to people that it was shocking. Numbered document - none of our other pieces of writing we"ve seen in this class yet have been dated upon their creation. Mr. spectator was literally a walking eye - whatever catches his eye is worth writing about. Talked about culture - not news, entertaining and very funny. Huge deal to people because it was so young. Everyone has a certain level of taste, but this can be improved. Look at best examples of the best paintings/best authors/etc. to eventually learn or incorporate a certain standard of what is good. Hang out with other people with good taste - associate with others! Moves this out of the realm of the individual and into the realm of interacting with others iii. Locke - sensory experience is the foundation for all knowledge.
