ENVS 2040 Lecture Notes - Lecture 8: Pest Control, Sugarcane, Lymantria Dispar Dispar
Document Summary
Percentage of crop loss is dependent on several different factors, with a focus on crop type and the type of pest. Crop loss equates to billions of dollars lost annually. As we have learned crops can be negatively impacted by things such as disease, insects (pests), and weeds. Each of these 3 examples all have different magnitudes on how they impact crops. The magnitude of their impact is dependent on the type of crop they are impacting. For example, potato crops suffer approximately 22% of loss from diseases and on the other hand suffer approximately 7% and 4% from insects and weeds respectively. Some crops are more vulnerable to loss from the 3 factors described above than other crop types. Sugarcane crops for example suffer a total loss of 55% whereas cereals and potato crops suffer approximately 33% total loss. Losses in crop from disease, weeds, and insects adds up to billion dollars lost annually!
