Known as morphological castes: worker (non-reproductive female), drone (male) and queen (reproductive female) External skeleton composed of hardened plates (made out of chitin) connected by membranes to provide the insect with a structure and movement. Function: 1. provides protection, 2. support and attachments for muscles and organs and 3. prevents dehydration. Three body segments: head, thorax and abdomen, each with sub-segments: the head. Contains the major sense organs: a structure that detects some type of stimulus, such as a ray of light or chemical odor, and transmits what is detected via nervous system. Sensory and digestive structures: eyes, antennae and mouthparts, body hairs. Two types; three ocelli or simple eyes, and two compound eyes; Simple eyes lenses that act as a light sensor, detect light intensity. Bees can"t see red, but they can see ultraviolet (humans cannot); important for the bees to detect the nectar in the flowers; trichromatic vision. They tend to sting when you wear darker clothes.
