Document Summary

Body waves: travel through the earths interior to study the composition of the earths interior: p waves (travel through compaction and contraction and through al types of material) travel the fastest, s waves (travel only through solids) Surface waves: travels along earths surface most destructive. Upper mantle (asthenosphere at the top of the upper mantle and is 10% molten, important when analysing plate tectonics) 650-670 km. In asthenosphere and in ulvz both p waves and s waves slowdown. The outer part of earth is called lithosphere, it is cold rigid and broken into pieces called lithosphere pates. Lithosphere includes earths crust and underlying part of upper mantle. 100km. lithosphere floats on the asthenosphere a weaker hotter layer that is believed to be partly molten. The top of the asthenosphere is located 80-100km below the surface. Both p and s waves slow down in the asthenosphere.
