Document Summary

Week 11: contemporary health/social issues: end of life care. Wanted to do her phd on death education: no one wanted to talk about it though. Told to get over the deaths of others because it is easier for those around us. We are told we live in a (cid:498)death defying(cid:499) world but that is not true. We need to talk about dying as a normative life event. By using euphemisms for death we are isolating ourselves from the experience. We struggle with having a healthy relationship with death because we lack in death education. We are exposed to a lot of informal death education. Scientific advances have made death a medicalized event: but death is a human experience a social process, birth also used to be a highly medicalized process. By 2031 the number of older seniors (aged 80 and over) will account for between 6. 1% and 6. 5% of the total canadian population: each year more than 259,000 canadians die.
