FOOD 2010 Lecture Notes - Lecture 8: Baby Food, Fiberboard, Food Packaging
Document Summary
Consumers are criticizing for over packaging which contributes to waste disposal problems. All packaging can be contained in 4 categories: containment, protection, convenience, communication. To maintain product quality and safety from production to end product at a minimal cost. Facilitates the division of product into individual units such as cartons, cans, pouches, etc. These can then be grouped into packs, e. g. six-pack. Maintain the integrity of the product as well as safety. Keep desirable characteristics in and undesireable elements out. For example: coffee packaging keeps product dry and protects flavour from escaping, keeping out moisture, microorganisms, dust, pests, etc. Undesireable elements can lead to chemical changes e. g. lipid oxidization. Packaged units should be light-weight, easy to open and hold. Used to communicate methods regarding identity, quantity, ingredient content. Can also influence consumer buying decisions with the visual cues (e. g. the shape of the bottle of coke, creative labels)
