FOOD 2150 Lecture Notes - Lecture 8: Exponential Growth, Food Security, Block Chain
Document Summary
Due to the exponential growth of the worlds population, people will need to produce more food than they have in the past 10,000 years. Due to climate change, people are likely going to experience unpredictable weather patterns, which in turn will impact food availability and crop harvests. This slide is a snapshot in time about food costs. Overall, food prices in the past 20 years are very high, although they drop periodically. When high averages and drops occur, a statistician may say they are variable or highly volatile. This means that overall, food prices are variable and highly volatile. This is the food crisis in real time, and changed need to be made to the food industry in order to combat this or food prices will continue to increase. This is also a major food security challenge, as these high prices drive poverty.
