Goals of parenting: achievement of self-sufficiency and independence, successful rearing of child to adulthood. Models of parent-child relations: parent-to-child unidirectional model. One direction- parents influence child: child-to-parent unidirectional model. Child"s temperament affects parenting techniques/ styles: bidirectional parent-child model. Psychoanalytic theories: erikson(invariant ordering, trust vs. mistrust. Does the child find caregivers to be reliable: autonomy vs. shame/doubt. How much of the world can a child control: initiative vs. Does the child initiate tasks and goals: industry vs. inferiority. Does the child feel good at what he/she does: identity vs. role confusion. Issues: identity confusion, identity foreclosure, negative identity, moratorium: intimacy vs. Will i settle down: generativity vs. stagnation. Psychological theories: piaget theory of cognitive and perceptual development, stage must be learned and mastered before they can move on to the next one. Play stage- learns how to take on and play social roles game stage- learns rules: ecological theoretical model of development. Each level has more complex interactions/ relationships: attachment theory.
