Dating was regulated by chaperones, could be sibling, parent or someone hired. Used to have to ask parental permission, guy had to initiate: focused on the way of asking for the guy and way of being for the girl. After ww1, less supervision: more competition because less men, dating became a rite of passage to understand gender roles, status and, identity, women had to step into classically male jobs, have more independence. Men used to be initiators - now women have more direct role. Use of new technology, having fun, and meeting new people. 2 individuals who are attending a function together. Purpose is for entertainment, not choosing a life partner: hanging out or hooking up. Connected to social status: single vs. relationship status. Skipper and nass (1968) identified 4 functions of dating . Gaining status: highlights that you are attractive and popular. Socialization: how to behave in intimate encounters, might lead to self reflection and improvements.
