Couple and family relationships lecture 23 march 16th. Gender is more complicated than how we are raised and socialized. Something internal that tells you who you are. Gender is part biology, part identity, part expression. Sexuality is part identity, part attraction and part behaviour. Northern thailand: kathoey as a third gender. Biological female who wants to be accepted as and live like a man, attracted to women: samoan fa"afafine. Biological males who dress and act feminine. Not true for every one but that is the majority: learning theories. We learn behaviours from our interactions with the environment. The idea that boys are more aggressive is cultural expectation not biological. Cognitive theory of gender identity : kohlberg (1966) How children are socialized to gender roles: gender labelling (2 or 3 years) Understand that the are either boys or girls. How their bodies look: gender stability (preschool) Understand gender is stable (ex. boys become men)
