Dating became rite of passage to understand gender roles, status, and identity. Casual dating, steady, dating engagement, and marriage. Men used to be initiators now women have more direct role. Use of technology, having fun, and meeting new people. Two individuals who are attending a function together. Purpose is for entertainment, not choosing a life partner. Skipper and nass (1968) identified four functions of dating. Gaining status- highlight attractive and popular can increase status within social group. If you are partner is considered attractive, it can improve the way people perceive you. Socialization - how to behave in intimate encounters. Recreation - have fun while trying something new. Mate selection - determine who would make a good life partner for you. Sex is okay if two people are not married, but in love. Love does not have to exist for a person to have premarital sex.
