Chapter 2- using theory and research to understand human sexuality. Evolution: the development of a species to its present state, which involves adaptations to its environment. Natural selection: adaptive traits allow species to survive and pass them on to future generations. Sociobiology: the idea that social behaviour results from evolution. Evolution in sexuaity focuses on gender differnecs in mating strategies for reproductive success. Since men and women play different roles in reproduction, the also have different strategies for passing on genes. Studied the differences between short term mating and long term mating. Studies show men have evolved to have a greater performance than women in casual sex because it allows them to father more children aka increases the chances of their genes getting passed on. Women prefer long term mating, only produce so many kids so they have to be selective.
