Erikson: initiative vs guilt: need to take responsibility, self-reliance, more independent, exploring their world - learning. Initiative linked to self-worth: frustration - angry - manifests and can reflect on self. Self-worth/esteem = comparison to others: praise effort not outcome. Parents role: allow child to try to make mistakes. Are you there: are you present, paying attention or just there, nurture success, reasonable expectations, focus on process, not outcome. Foster freedom to choose: acknowledge emotions, shows a teaches empathy, everyone can cry, does cry, has emotions - normal. If they are not successful at something or are discouraged start to internalize that thought that they can"t do something. Learned helplessness: learned to be helpless because are told this, or things are always done for them because they are told they (cid:272)a(cid:374)"t. Issue especially with a child who has a disability - told (cid:272)a(cid:374)"t (cid:373)akes the(cid:373) feel like they (cid:272)a(cid:374)"t, never given chance to try and learn independence.
