Document Summary

Week 7: lenses for understanding social determinants of health. Thinking ahead, being proactive instead of reactive. What we do early in life effects our aging process. Look at education, poverty reduction, mental health intervention earlier in life. But these are often long-term interventions but election cycles run every four years: a lot of these things cost a lot of money up-front. We"re also still dealing with the downstream incidents so it"s hard to deal with the things that haven"t happened yet. Women live longer than men, however they are more likely to suffer both chronic conditions, and limitations in their activities of daily living. Overall, older adults tend to exhibit favorable and often better, psychological well-being than do younger adults. Because of the prevalence of chronic conditions in old age, social gerontologists are concerned with quality of life experienced by older adults. Health has typically been defined in terms of the absence of disease.
