Week 9: contemporary social issues: housing & caring for an aging. Long wait for long term care: 8% of older adults live in long term care, don"t usually get in until their care needs are quite high. Affordable housing in general the cost is increasing. Those who are living in the community get help from : family physicians, home-care, family can cook, drive, socialize with their older family members, provide technology support, yard work. The person-environment interaction: meaning that the environment evokes, how individual competences and environmental factors interact to foster adaption in late life. 92% of people are aging at home. How does diversity fit in ltc: lgbtq may feel like they have to be re-closeted if they move into ltc, elderly immigrants who don"t speak english. Dementia is progressive, brain cells become damage and die. It is irreversible, by 2030 75. 6 million will suffer from it.
