Document Summary
Ocean: shipping transport, tourism, fisheries and aquaculture, offshore and tidal energy. Seafood is the largest single food commodity exported by canada. Canada is the 5th largest exporter of seafood in the world. Over 50% of canada"s seafood goes to the us; european and asian markets are growing. Maintaining a sustainable industry is of great importance to canadians, especially on the coasts. Driftnet and long-line: good for catching migrating schools of fish, set the lines and wait for fish to swim by (either nets or hooks, catch a good number of fish but still by-catch. Pots and traps: set out traps on the ocean floor (baited traps more on luck) Hand lines: set out a line with multiple hooks and are pulling the line in by hand. Bottom-trawl: most industrialized, large weighted nets that get dragged along the bottom of the ocean, tendency for nets to destroy habitats, good for quantity but not for going after a single type.
