GEOG 1220 Lecture Notes - Lecture 6: Habitat Destruction, International Whaling Commission, Parks Canada
Document Summary
Half of the world"s marine fish populations are fully exploited: meaning they cannot be harvested more intensely without depleting them, one quarter of our marine populations are overexploited. Total global fisheries catch leveled off after 1988: if this trend continues populations of all ocean species that we fish for today will collapse by the year 2048. Today commercial fishing fleets are highly industrialized capturing fish in huge volumes: factory fishing vessels process and freeze their catches at sea. Longline fishing: setting out extremely long lines with several thousand baited hooks to catch tuna and swordfish. Trawling: dragging immense cone shaped nets through the water with weights at the bottom and floats on top: trawling in open water catches pelagic fish, bottom trawling catches ground fish and scallops. By-catch: the species that are accidentally captured during fishing such as birds, sharks, marine mammals was caught. An estimated 300,000 seabirds die each year after getting caught on long line hooks.
