Many of the issues addressed in this course are difficult to understand and extremely difficult to solve. This is due in large measure to the complexity of the issues and the scale at which they are occurring. Moreover, deciding on appropriate solutions is not straightforward. Indeed, even acknowledging what the major problems are is not easy and is often contested. For example, for many years, and even to this day, influential decision makers in many countries deny the existence of global change resulting from the combustion of fossil fuels. Our views of the environment and the place of humans in the environment explain, in part, our perceptions of problems, solutions and the type of society we strive to maintain or create.
