GEOG 1350 Lecture Notes - Lecture 5: Frost Heaving, Sinkhole, Carbonate Rock
Document Summary
Subsidence - lowering of earth s surface due to sediment compaction / earthquake / natural processes. Karst - area of carbonate rock characterised by features of dissolved materials - drainage in karst is not very good. Topography - the shape and physical features of the land. Sinkhole - surface depression formed by solution underlying limestone or by a collapse in a cave. Karst plain - generally flat region containing numerous sinkholes which have developed in limestone or marble. Cave systems - a natural cavity produced by slow solution of limestone or marble - many consist of chambers. Permafrost - rock or sediment that is colder than 0 degrees continuously for at least 2 years. Aquifer - water-bearing body of rock or sediment which is capable of providing sufficient amounts for groundwater usage. Frost heaving - upward movement of land caused by the formation of ice below the surface.
