Chapter 2 getting started with arcgis: it is important because it allows you to specify a default folder, where input and output data are stored. Failure to do so means your data will be given a default name and written to scratch workplace: this happens because arcmap chooses layers from the bottom of the selection list and then upwards. The item at the top of the list is illustrated on top in the map display window, and the features in the top layer will block out features in layers beneath it. When changed to miles, the divisions are spaced out better and the numbers decrease: the small globe icon is called full extent . By clicking on this, it allows you to zoom in and see all the full extent of your map. By default, it"s all of the data in the active data frame. It may be useful when needing to see closer attributes your map.
