GEOG 3020 Lecture Notes - Lecture 12: Adaptive Capacity
Document Summary
The previous lesson established some first principles" by which we can develop an approach to understand how communities are impacted global environmental changes. To validate the approach, we used the example of the. California water crisis which tested the limits (coping range) of california"s political and economic system to cope with the shortage of water. Not everyone was equally affected by the drought in california however. Even though exposures were common, they were experienced differently by individuals, households, and regions, with greater or lesser frequency, and with greater or lesser impact. The concept of differential vulnerability" reminds us that we can"t assume that all people and places will experience exposures in the same way. By the end of this lecture, you will be able to: articulate the factors that shape the vulnerability" of a given community in relation to a particular exposure, define vulnerability, resilience, and adaptive capacity.
