The us became obsessed with fighting communism. Cuban revolution successful: gave thrust to revolutionary movements in latin america, revolutions required violence (guerrilla warfare) The alliance for progress attempted to reduce the appeal of revolution by supporting people in the middle: christian democrats, chilean christian democrats. Progressive, middle ground between capitalism and socialism (1960"s) Tried to pull away from reliance on mining and break up foreign ownership. 51% of the mining should be owned by chile: ends up satisfying nobody pressures from both sides. Star of the alliance for progress: reduced attraction for the cuban revolution. Salvador allende: general leftist opposition, he was a marxist, the us spent millions to support frei and to oppose allende, allende won the popular vote, not by a huge majority, shot to the alliance for progress. Democratically elected marxist leader: allende was committed to ending large scale capitalism. Peaceful road to socialism, chilean rode to socialism: nixon tried to block the inauguration.
