Around 1609, galileo"s telescope"s magnification was 20x: the starry messenger (sidereus nuncius) (1610) This introduced the idea of chance and dethrones the earth as something special. Once he became a court philosopher for duke, he moved to rome: 1611: galileo visits rome; treated like a celebrity. Before galileo, the moon was depicted as perfect and smooth. It was a movement to reaffirm the idea of culturization: council of trent 1545 1563, jesuits, aristotle reinforced as dogma e. g. cardinal robert bellarmine (1542 1621) Catholic church to affirm themselves as an institution, they viewed any opinion even slightly against them or different then thteirs as a threat. Galileo was the first one to separate religeon from science. He thought the bible is open to interpretation. However, he thought the natural world is not open to interpretation.
