They did not come self-sufficient, they relied heavily on the pre-existing industry in the colonies they were arriving in. Took a huge amount of capital to migrate! Migrants went all over the world, including even asia. Irish potato famine went to the cities in ireland but also went to british. 2/3 of these irish immigrants were protestants, they took to farming instead of going to the cities. Steam) streamlined immigration and migration because it made it predictable. No longer did ships depend on ocean currents and winds therefore they could actually schedule their arrivals. Pioneers still moved quite a bit after arriving - this can be shown through census data. Populations would fluctuate because people were extremely mobile. Younger people wanting to start farms of their own would have to move increasingly further from their families to get land as areas got increasingly dense. People crossed the border regularly back and forth.
