In fact, the factories and mechanical technology increased the need for horses: during the first third of the 20th century, horses were replaced by the main power source of the 20th century, the internal combustion engine. In 1900 the ratio of horses to humans peaked. At that time there was one horse for every 3 humans: by the turn of the century, some forms of transportation that relied on horses were in decline. This situations, however would change over the next 30 years. Outside of cities, people continued to ride horseback. In all parts of the country, equines were still the mainstay for pulling vehicles that transported people and goods. In rural areas and towns people kept their own riding horses and horse- drawn rigs. American values of hard work, courage, thrift, loyalty, and good disposition: morgans were viewed as smart and reliable, horses that could be counted on to trot all day in good or bad weather.
