Only a small percentage worked on large plantations. Most slaves worked on small farms with only a few slaves working. African culture that was kept alive in the united states. Mainly from central and western parts of africa. African dance circles practiced for funerals and festivals. Drums were a very important part of these ceremonies. Drums would bring about ancestors and send them back. Drums weren"t easily accessible for slaves in the united states. Drums would bring slaves together and that isn"t what the slaveholders wanted (rebellion). Slaves success would depend on several factors such as the state they were in (south carolina was an easier state).
