Thucydides wrote that the growing power of athens showed that war was inevitable. Athens was too powerful, and frightened the lacedaemon (the spartans) Athens was growing a naval army, and weren"t afraid to use it they had an incredibly powerful economy and almost endless resources. Sparta"s military power came in the form of hoplite warriors and they were unable to change that, because of the commands of lycurgus plus sparta didn"t believe in walls. Sparta marched north towards athens with his infantry army wanted to draw the athens into battle which they will obvs win. The longest that the spartans can really stay in athens is 40 days because they have to crush the helot rebellion.
