The taiping targeted confucianism in favour of christianity. Taiping started in the south and then made their way to the center. Many argue that the environment prior to the taiping rebellion was ripe for the rebellion because there was much social unrest. Hakka they formed the core leadership of the taiping. Were han chinese but had different customs: believed in communal living, did not bind feet, had own local dialect, insisted on participation in the exam system.
