If caught: they would be punished severely, arrested, put on trial, go to jail or publicly humiliated: deborah sampson. Was single and in her 20s during the revolutionary war. She enlists in 1782 with the americans. Didn"t have difficulty disguising herself has masculine features, was tall. Was wounded in one battle and didn"t want to go to the hospital because she would be caught. She takes the musket balls in her thigh out herself. 1783, she comes with an illness called malignant fever. Was very severe since her life was on the line. The doctor discovers that she"s a woman but doesn"t report her and instead she"s allowed to live with the doctor"s family until she recovers. When the war ends, her male persona is made public. Gets married in 1792, a farmer"s wife, has children.
