Document Summary

W4: genre, stars & pre-war hollywood as collaborati. Two articles about a number of individuals who worked in hollywood demonstrating how people/horses passed in and out of the industry their stories are much more typical than the stories of big-name hollywood stars we considered last week. Independent responses to studio domination of hollywood and effect on funding, casting of films for majority white audience across the nation. Efforts to push minorities out in favor of white stars whitewashing of non-white/anglo-american stories by casting white actors with make-up and costuming that portrayed race or ethnicity. Foreign characters were played by white characters ex. Rudolph valentino played a series of arab/sheik characters. There was not a very large arab american community in the us so it"s not clear that they could have actually cast an actual arab but it was still a safer bet for studios to cast a white actor.
