A bunch of people sitting in a dark room watching images projected on a screen (therefore, watching television is not cinema) An icon of modernity, immediately a consumer product. Massively popular in big cities, especially with immigrants. Vaudeville theatres started erecting screens as they watched their profits starting to slip away with the entrance of cinema on the scene now people wanted to watch movies and not the vaudeville theatre acts. Little arcade game sized machines with an eye piece that people would look into and view a couple seconds of moving film for a nickel or two (hence the names) Whole arcades would be set up with only these machines and nothing else. Following an explosion of a battleship in maine, film companies jumped at the chance to monetize the national sorrow and showed stock footage films or random boats in maine and war images all around the nation.
