Power was managed in many ways which disguised the patchiness of actual strength. Key to understanding nature of empire and extent of british power in empire. First act of power was reigning in and controlling the merchant adventure. Goal: overhaul the management of the east india company"s rule in india. Conquest of bengal had cost the british 3 million sterling pound (regained quickly) Cost of multiple wars in india to gain access to land profit. Save money and do very little in empire in order to gain more later. 1765-1820s policy of non-interference is british imperial policy. London was the centre of imperial legislation central government responsible for many departments; responsibilities divided amongst departments. Multiple departments (administrative, commercial, military, etc. ) diffused power no one sole power in britain.
