Basic questions we ask in the study of morphology. The study of the shapes of words. What are words: strings of sounds with particular meanings. Words added in a sentence are never added within anther word. There is a pote(cid:374)tio(cid:374)al prause (cid:271)efore a(cid:374)d after, (cid:374)ot i(cid:374) the (cid:373)iddle of a (cid:449)ord. Minimal free form (bloomfield): smallest unit of speech that can meaningfully stand on their o(cid:449)(cid:374). Individual vocabulary: 40000 words (2000 passive, 20000 active) What are the most common words in english. 9 words=1/4: and, be, have, it, of, the, two, will, you. Frequency analysis of english language: be, have, do, say, make, take, come, see, get. Taxonomy of species used binomial nomenclature system: 2 words. Content words: (nouns, verbs, adjectives, adverbs) are open class > new words are constantly being added. Grammatical words: (conjunctions, prepositions, pronouns) are closed class > new words are unlikely to be added. Words arranged by alphabetical order, not in word sets of families.
