>200 types of hpv; responsible for variety of warts. Most infecions (~80%) clears in 1-2 years: low-risk type virus strains causes warts, two high-risk type viral hpv strains are primary risk factors for cervical cancer; causes >75% of all cervical cancer cases. High risk hpv virus integrates in human genome; produces two viral proteins e6 and e7 (these target p53 and rb: e6 binds and targets p53 for destrucion. Cell cannot arrest cell cycle or acivate apoptosis: e7 binds and inacivates rb. E2f is released and acive; simulates cell cycle progression. E2f targets rb to think that the cell wants to go through the cell cycle. When e7 binds to rb, it makes the cell think that it needs to go through the cell cycle. Small number of all human genes associated with cancer. Broadly classiied into three groups: proto-oncogenes, tumor suppressors, dna repair genes. These play an important role in dna repair.
