Marginalizaion of music to appeal to lower-income white & black people on mainstream, naional radio. Radio made money on adverising and adverisers targeted the largest audience most likely to purchase products = the middle class this lower-class music was ignored by radio programmers. Musical styles could oten by ideniied with paricular regions of the country. Nbc in 1928 made the important step in removing regional boundaries of pop culture, using telephone lines to link staions across the country.
