Important decade for women"s & civil rights movements. Equity pay act (1963), civil rights act (1964) end of jim crow laws. Dr. marin luther king jr. was the symbol for the civil rights movement. Naional voing rights act (1965) strengthened the civil rights act. Black panther party (formed in 1966) demanded end to police brutality against poc. Movies relected pressure of cold war & the elegant jet set with dr. no (1962) with james bond. End of 1960s closed with a mixture of hope & fear with neil armstrong & buzz aldrin landing on the moon on july 20, 1969, but wounded over vietnam & civil rights. February 9, 1964, the beatles appeared on ed sullivan"s tv show (just as elvis had done 8 years earlier in 1956), became household name overnight. Briish pop in the late 50s & early 60s. Prior to 1964, american listeners viewed britain as a secondary force in popular music.
