Unit 11: rock subversion, punk & the new wave vs. mtv. Shits in the music industry: the advent of album-oriented rock (aor) & corporate rock (1975-1980) Labels signed older groups rather than risk new acts & mainstream rock account for ~80% of all music sales, corporate rock . Recordable tapes became available in 1971: allowed piraing albums, new acts could cheaply record music, spurred underground music (punk, new wave, rap) Fm radio transiioned from late 60s free form to aor, established model by tom donahue. Extended tracks & rock symphonies were no longer considered radio friendly . Moved towards commercial tendencies of am, program directors wanted commercials, shorter songs. Record industry associaion of america (riaa) launched plainum award (album w/ million copies) Eagles abandoned easygoing country rock for harder rocking, more mainstream style, was successful. Fleetwood mac started as a briish blues band in the late 60s, style was revamped focusing on mainstream rock & ballads ater 1975.
