Reveals the raga and what notes are included in it. Improvised because freedom is valued in muslim culture. Hindustani mostly instrumental/carnatic more based on vocal traditions. Difference: hindustanti music guarded by outsiders because their music is sacred musical value-> hindustani music is guarded. Hindustani, muslim music is more improvised/carnatic, hindu music is more composed. Kristis: genre, a specified piece with a certain type of form. Alapanam: same as alap, reveals notes of raga, reveals raga. Pallavi: chorus, something that is repeated again and again (eduppu = Mukhra): short melody that appears in a specific place in the raga, Anupalllavi: verse (new material in a song, never repeated), bring back certain repeated aspects of the pallavi, charanam: more free improvisation with a tala (beat) Nirava: basing improv on melodies that already exist, Kalpanaswaram: using bols sa ni sa ni trikala: type of improvisation with reference to the tala, doubles or more the rhythm.
