Often considered to be a moral theory but we are going to look it as a political theory morally right act/policy = greatest happiness for greatest number: drops every definition of god, don"t revolve around religion. Example: furious boyfriend comes to a friend"s house and asks for his gun and is mad at his girlfriend. If you can make the world a better place by lying. What makes actions right or wrong is consequences. Utilitarianism tells us that right thing to do should be judged by consequences. Example: living in a time gay marriage is illegal, consequences of getting married, get in lots of trouble if you do many people think it is right even though it has consequences. Imagine you can torture an 8-year-old because he has information about a bomb and by this way you can save 10 people. People who say it is okay value of one life is not much compared to 10.
