PHIL 1010 Lecture 2: canadian senate
Document Summary
The case: the canadian senate it was established by constitution act of 1867. It has 105 members appointed by the governor general on the recommendation of the prime minister. The senate is supposed to represent the interests of the provinces and territories rather than their relative population. Senate is supposed to be the chamber of sober second thought": senators are to examine carefully the bills that the house passes, suggesting amendments, and proposing the reform of existing legislation. Because of the appointed status of the senators and their close tie with the part of the prime minister, many question the independence of the senate. Recalling plato"s republic, we can note some similarities between the auxiliary guardians and the members of the senate. Both groups are supposed to exhibit wisdom, courage and good judgment. Here, the senators are not the rulers like in republic but the rulers" advisors, auxiliaries to the ruler.
