PHIL 1010 Lecture Notes - Lecture 5: Political Philosophy, Deductive Reasoning, Human Body
Document Summary
This text is widely regarded as most influential text in english political philosophy. Using this method, hobbes set out on an ambitious project of studying the physical nature, the nature of humanity, and the nature of human society (64) For hobbes there are three kinds of bodies: physical bodies like stone, human body, the body politic. Both physical and mental events are nothing more than bodies in motion. Continual relinquishing of one place and acquiring of another . The goal of political philosophy is to account for how to achieve peace in society. Human qualities and abilities, then, are explained in terms of different sorts of motions: vital (such as a heartbeat) and voluntary (66) He analyzes human motivation by saying that everyone possesses a twofold endeavor, namely appetite and aversion. These two endeavors account for a person"s motions to and from persons and objects, and have the same meanings as the words love and hate. (67)
