PHIL 2280 Lecture Notes - Lecture 3: Political Liberalism, Justice As Fairness
Document Summary
Plato and john rawls two people who famously spent an entire book thinking about justice. Different types of groups come together through a set of rules defining their practices. Justice helps us deal with and avoid disputes within sets of practices: justice is not meant to be the only virtue of social institutions. Each person is to have an equal right to the most extensive scheme of equal basic liberties compatible with a similar scheme of liberty for others. Social and economic inequalities are to arranged so that they are both (a) reasonably expected to be to everyone"s advantage; and (b) attached to positions and offices open to all. Note: social and economic inequalities, not inequality in liberty or rights. Order of the two principles is important. 2(a) sometimes called the difference principle; even equal liberties will result in social and economic principles. Minimum requirement for difference principle: it must raise the status of the worst off in society.
