POLS 1150 Lecture Notes - Lecture 26: War Powers Resolution, Hippocratic Oath
Document Summary
The idea that members of various professions should be willing to disobey government orders if they are in violation of their professional standards (doctors, lawyers, engineers, etc. ) Example if a doctor takes the hippocratic oath to do what is in the best interest of the patient, and the government enacts a policy that will harm the patient, the doctor should disobey those instructions. Advantage: people with expert knowledge are making the decisions, rather than politicians; objective knowledge should be driving their actions, rather than legislation (often political compromises) E. g. , peer oversight when people who are experts in the field judge the actions of professionals; but sometimes the peers that are overseeing the professionals aren"t as rigorous as they should be (e. g. , conflicts of interest) These issues arise when particular divisions are made within government as well. Refers to situations in which an individual knows what is right and what needs to be done.
